DJ Risto
Prior to telling you about the middle, Risto likes to
remember the beginning, which brings us back in time to
1988.
Having the necessary grades, Risto was dealt the decision of which secondary education institution to attend: Richmond Hill High School, Bayview, or Alexander Mackenzie. Risto balanced the advice of his family with that of his friends, but was hard pressed to make a decision. In the end, inspiration came from an unlikely muse: DJ Deadly Hedley.
It was the evening, and Risto was upstairs battling his xenophobia, when suddenly from beyond the depths of his Nintendo he perceived something truly alien: a fascinating sound. The sound beckoned Risto forth, and so he sped off, as fast as his Air Jordan's would permit, and was led to the kitchen. In the kitchen Risto found his sister, the Heli demon, talking on the phone with this week's best friend. Beside Heli was the source of the mysterious and alluring sound: she was rocking the tunes on her ghetto blaster.
The low fidelity speakers of the ghetto blaster resonated with delight, swelling with the symphony of sound that is Joe Smooth's I'll Be There. Risto was awestruck as he addressed his sister: "What is this? Have you got more? Answer me, woman!", to which Heli replied dismissively "It's Dance music. They play it at school dances". The future structure of Risto's life began to take shape: Heli attended Richmond Hill High School, and Risto now learned that Richmond Hill High staged 'school dances' showcasing the latest sounds of that most elegant of all musical forms - 'Dance'. The once hidden landscape ahead of Risto began to reveal itself.
The decision to attend Richmond Hill High School was easy to make, and it turned out that Risto had to go to Bayview High School dances to hear good House music.
DJ'ing fostered an interest in music production, and led Risto to explore the world of amateur tracking. Click here to read about Risto's journey into amateur music production, and to listen to his House beats.
